
Biodiesel is an alternative fuel for diesel engines that can be made from virtually any oil or fat feedstock. The process of Biodiesel production involves reacting vegetable oils or animal fats catalytically with a short-chain aliphatic alcohols (typically methanol or ethanol). The process requires the removal of dirt and any other non-oil material found in the influent. Water also must be removed so as to not cause the triglycerides to hydrolyze fats to form free fatty acids which can form soap instead of undergoing transesterification to give biodiesel.
